Campion Terrace

A Victorian terraced house within the Royal Leamington Spa Conservation area, it was formerly used as a house of multiple occupation. To suit the needs of a growing young family, it is now in need of reimagining. The internal layout is unchanged since the house was first built. As such, the kitchen, dining and living rooms are separated in the Victorian tradition. The client’s want to create a vibrant and bright space in the centre of the house that can play host all the activities of daily life.

Currently, the house has a rear extension and a habitable basement, but these sit above and below the rear garden, which is accessed from both floors by awkwardly placed flights of steps. The clients enjoy the generously proportioned spaces of the ground floor but the poor connection to the garden means they can’t enjoy the house to its full potential.

The proposed changes to the rear of the existing house are subtle, but create a significant difference to the how the spaces are lived in. The rear extension will be enlarged to become a dining room and integrated into the current kitchen. The resultant space will be a naturally-lit and uplifting place in which to cook, eat and relax. A simple adjustment to internal levels will dramatically improve the relationship between the living spaces and the garden, enabling the clients to open the house to the garden when they choose.
